Burt Cheevers: Indeed, independent study does offer a potentially quicker and more effective method of instruction. The greatest detriment could be to his social skills. Depending on his age, it could make him feel socially awkward, but if he already has friends or is out-going that should not be a problem. For his elementary school years and even middle-school, I believe independent study would provide him an edge intellectually, if he is adequately stimulated. Being a product of public school myself, there is great waste of time and also some retardation of pace based upon the majority's' level. The only aspect he would lack in would be social, but you could tend to that. If intellectual Challenge is your paramount concern, check to see if schools nearby offer classes for 'gifted' students....Show more
Kris Bozelle: There are two problems with home schooling. One is that parents frequently lack the knowledge to teach advanced math, science and foreign languages.! The other is that students who are home schooled usually have a greater difficulty adjusting to college than do public school students. Home schooling is an option of last resort for children who cannot handle public school and have parents who cannot pay for religious or private school. I wish good luck to all home-schooled students....Show more
Florencio Dingle: It is all in the eye of the beholder. Homeschooling works best for my Daughter. She is a self learner and thrives on going at her own pace set forth by her. She has taught herself most things with me only being there as needed. I supply her with the tools and she goes to town with them. Funny thing is most Parents are actually homeschooling too because their kids are learning from everyday life experiences at home too. They also help them with their homework which I know for a fact they have a lot of unless they happen to do it after school. Yes it has been proven that children that are home schooled are! ahead of their peers....Show more

Marcellus Yoshimori: Home schooling requires a high level of motivation from both the student and home tutor. This type of schooling is best suited to the student who likes research and seeks out answers. Such a student can thrive in a home schooling environment since there are few distractions from fellow students and goals are self-set. The student tends to explore their own potential rather than conform to a class norm. The role of the tutor is to rein in wandering minds and ensure that the scheduling of assignments in the curriculum is observed. The remote program educator is always available to explain when a log jam occurs.Structured public schooling provides an environment where order drives the learning machine. While creative students are often stifled in such a system, those who need a lineal learning program to thrive do we! ll in this environment. The majority of students require a structured learning environment to achieve their potential. The emphasis on social development in public schools seems to be a reaction to the ongoing deterioration of the nuclear family, and as such teachers often take the role of confidant which was once a parents task. If you view that the goal in schooling is the acquisition of knowledge, properly structured home schooling provides a one on one experience not available elsewhere except for the very rich who can afford private teachers. But this assumes that the individual students are highly motivated. Those who regard sport, social skills and such as the primary role of schooling do best in a public school environment. While some bad habits are learnt, coping skills are also. As such it might be argued that a public school better prepares you for the rough and tumble of life after school....Show more
