What types of car insurance are there?

Granville Stray: Your question makes sense. There are 2 basic types of insurance.Liability - this covers damage that you cause to another vehicle. It would cover the cost to fix another vehicle that you hit or the injuries to the person in another vehicle in the event of an accident that is your fault. It is only for other vehicles and other people in a vehicle that you struck. Types of liability coverage are property damage coverage (PD) and bodily injury coverage (BI)First party comp/coll coverage - this covers damage to the vehicle YOU are driving whether or not you are at fault for an accident. It also coverage damage to your vehicle if its stolen, or if its struck by hail or something like that. This coverage is generally the most expensive, because it covers you no matter what, in the case of an accident or other event that affects your vehicle. Both of these cover a VEHICLE, so your mom's car would have liability and first party coverage, your dads car would h! ave liability and first party coverage, if your sister got a car, the same thing. Now there is another type of coverage, I can't remember the name of it, I think its called like non owner/operator policy. Its a very specific type of coverage for people who don't have a car, but they sometimes drive a friends car and they don't know if their friend has insurance so they want to carry their own policy....Show more

My mom just got my sister (who is 18) some type of insurance for driving. From what I know, it's expensive. But I know that our car has insurance. What kind of insurance did my sister possibly get and how does it differ from the insurance for the car itself? Is there "personal" insurance for each dri! ver? Is it required or is the car insurance only the main requ! irement? Which type of car insurance/s is required???...(sorry if my question doesn't make sense. I dont know how else to word it lol)Follow 6 answers...Show more

Ezekiel Kadner: Chances are mom added your sister as an additional driver on her policy. Really, all licensed drivers at the same address need to be on the policy, which means when you get your license you will also be added.Yes, as you though, insurance goes on the car. But the insurance looks at the risk factor of all the driver with access to the car, and adjusts the premium based on that risk factor....Show more

Gilberto Cratin: You are required to have a minimum amount of Liability coverage. Liability coverage covers any damage and/or bodily injury to other parties (up to the limits of your coverage) if you have an accident, and are at fault. You can also get Collision and Comprehensive coverage that will cover your car. Note that Liability coverage will not pay to fix your car. Collision covera! ge pays to fix your car if you are in an accident, and it is your fault. Comprehensive coverage pays to fix your car if something happens to it (it is stolen, it catches on fire, etc). You can also get Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which pays to fix your car if someone hits you, and they are uninsured, or don't have enough insurance to cover the damages. If your car is financed, the finance company will require that you carry all of the types of coverage mentioned above. When you have all of them, you have "full coverage."...Show more
