Dee Depung: a bird strike in a propeller aircraft is a little less serious compared to a turbo-fan powered airliner. if a bird strike occurs on a GA type, then most likely the engine will still function normally. however, there have been cases where birds fly into the engine cowling preventing sufficient airflow to cool it, therefor creating a problem, but in general its not an emergency (although would be a good idea to get on the ground asap for inspection by a technician).birds have been known to fly thru windows aswell, but thats ok - it will just be a little bit breezy :)...Show more
Gus Leiby: Birds come in an assortment of sizes, of course. Geese, for example, can weigh in at a hefty 30 lbs. and can have an adverse...er...impact...on the airframe, control surfaces, prop balance, windscreen, and side windows to include all that messy goo that can occlude vision.I'm not aware of any published checklist for birdstrikes on GA aircraft but here's my suggestion wh! en you hear/feel that big or little thump:1. Assess injuries to self and passengers, if any.2, Assess condition and integrity of the airframe, control surfaces and powerplant.3. Plan for the most expedient precautionary landing for an inspection of the aircraft.4. Finally, advise ATC of the incident and be prepared to report the conditions of all aboard, your assessment of your aircraft's airworthiness, your intentions to land, and any assistance you anticipate needing upon arrival....Show more
