receives 6-10% for a paperback and 10-15% for a hardcover. This would
be from an actual bookstore sold at retail price. When you buy them
from discount stores such as Walmart or Target, it's much less. When
you can get them directly from the publisher, it's more, but that's
not likely unless you're talking small press or indie authors. <br>

Also, if an author receives an advance, which happens less all the
time, she'll only start receiving royalties after the sales go over
what she already got as an advance. So that advance may be the only
money she ever sees from the book sale.
